During the summer of 2003 the church underwent major renovations that greatly improved the acoustics in the Sanctuary. Organ pipes were removed, cleaned, reinstalled and tuned. In addition, the tuning was changed to a mild unequal system. This tuning creates a hierarchy favoring standard keys. The relationship of tonic to thirds and fifths is more pure in these keys than the usual equal temperament. The result is that each key has its own character, and no key sounds exactly like another. The intervallic relationships of this particular system were the work of Dr. Anton Kellner, a Bach scholar, who believed this to be the tuning system Bach had in his day.
